The master-servant culture is deeply inhumane. It creates suffering and inequality and robs people of their dignity and freedom. It’s just unjust and morally wrong. The Netflix series Master of the House is based on this theme, and for the most part, it really reminded me of the movie Parasite. At the start of the series, a billionaire diamond merchant named Roongroj Thevasatitpaisarn died. But who did it? Maybe it was his arrogant sons, Phupat or Mavin, who are full of themselves. Their father was never happy with them and thinks they’re a disgrace, no matter what they did. Maybe that’s why he got killed, as an outburst of their pent-up anger? Or maybe it was the servants in their house who might have had enough of all the torture. They are forced to do so many things and treated cruelly just because they are poor and helpless. Throughout the series, we’ll see the servants’ struggles and the emotional and physical abuse they endure from the masters of the house. As we unravel the mystery of Roongroj’s death, we’ll also get a closer look at the harsh reality of these servants’ lives. Let’s see how everything unfolds through the recap and ending explainer of Master of the House.
Roongroj Thevasatitpaisarn was the master of the house and a diamond tycoon who ran a ten billion-baht company called Theva Gems. Building such a legacy made him a really proud man. He didn’t have a wife, as she had passed away, but he had two sons, Phupat and Mavin, their kids, and their wives. Calling them a family, though, felt like an exaggeration because he was so cold and distant from them all. He’d always wanted his sons to compete against each other from a very young age. He was a cruel man who loved to exploit the helpless with his power and money, and he wanted his sons to be the same. Even though his sons were desperate to become the next heirs of the billion-baht empire, he didn’t care about them and believed they were a disgrace. Instead, he decided to leave all his assets to his servant, Kaimook, who was soon to become his wife. Unlike the other servants, Kaimook caught his attention because they shared a similar interest in the greenhouse Roongroj had built, especially in the moths and butterflies. She showed him that she cared about these things too to make sure she got special treatment. And that’s exactly what happened.
On Roongroj’s birthday, while his sons were busy giving him expensive gifts, he announced out of nowhere that he was going to marry Kaimook. You should have seen their faces! It was a shock and a disgrace to the family. After all, Roongroj himself had set an example by treating the servants poorly, like dogs who had to obey every command or otherwise face severe consequences. So how Kaimook managed to win him over was a huge surprise. Realizing they wouldn’t be getting any money from their father, Phupat and Mavin started to get into trouble with their father. As that phase kept on going, in the meantime, one evening we saw that Roongroj fell from the balcony of their house, hit his head, and died on the spot. Even though the police said it was an accident, Kaimook didn’t believe it. After all, she was his wife, and he had willed his entire fortune to her and her future children. Despite being tortured by the master, she wanted justice and suspected that either Phupat or Mavin were involved in his death. She just needed to find out who did it.
Even though Roongroj had died, that didn’t mean Kaimook had to leave the house. She was the new mother of both Phupat and Mavin. But, as I mentioned earlier, these people were horrible to their servants. They took pleasure in humiliating and exploiting them. When Kaimook started living in the mansion instead of the servant quarters, the family made sure she knew she didn’t belong. Mavin’s wife, Araya, deliberately put hair in Kaimook’s soup. When Mavin learned that his father had left the assets in Kaimook’s name, he literally offered her money and told her not to sign the inheritance papers and leave the house. But she didn’t budge. Then, at a charity event hosted by their company, Araya humiliated her by forcing her into public speaking even though she knew she wasn’t comfortable with it. In front of everyone, Araya called her uneducated. It was really awful. Kaimook realized it was better to live in the house as a servant instead of pretending to be part of the family. There was more peace in it because none of them would ever really accept her, and they would keep humiliating her. So, she decided to become their servant again.
By now, it was clear that both Mavin and Phupat only cared about getting their father’s inheritance. When Mavin found out that the will was in Kaimook’s name, he didn’t tell Phupat. Instead, he contacted the lawyer himself and tried to bribe him to make Mavin the sole inheritor of Theva Gems by cutting out his brother. When the lawyer refused, Mavin threatened to expose the lawyer’s daughter’s drug abuse issue to the world. And obviously, being a master of manipulation, Mavin succeeded. He secured the company in his name and became president by having the lawyer create a fake will.
Phupat’s daughter, Kita, wanted to be a fashion designer, but she didn’t have the talent for it. Her father forced her to go to France and get a degree in fashion design, even though she didn’t want to. Instead, she wanted to go to New York with her love, Shutter, who was actually her cousin—the son of Araya and Mavin. They both wanted to start a new life together, away from all the family drama. But Kita had her family’s ruthless streak. When she had the chance to show off her designs, she used Bee, another servant in their house, to create the designs for her. Even though Bee was the one doing all the work, Kita took all the credit. The truth didn’t stay hidden for long, and others found out how Kita had used Bee. In a rage, Kita literally put Bee’s hand in a sewing machine, so she lost the ability to design anymore. Kita ruined her own career and reputation, but she made sure to destroy Bee’s future too. She was that cruel. Bee couldn’t let this go. She had to take revenge. So, on the night Mavin was announcing his presidency in front of a live audience, Bee used a camera set in Kita’s dog’s collar to show the audience the sick love-making sessions of Shutter and Kita. It was humiliating for both Mavin and Phupat. Mavin couldn’t just stand by and let it slide. He literally trapped Bee in a cage infested with deadly worms to inflict pain on her.
Before becoming a servant in the Thevasatitpaisarn mansion, Tian was a thug, and Kaew was a prostitute. Life had been incredibly unfair to them by leaving them poor and struggling to survive. When Kaew entered the lavish mansion and became Mavin’s personal servant and often his pleasure muse, she thought, like Kaimook, her luck would change. She hoped Mavin would show her respect and dignity. But that never happened. Instead, when Kaew became pregnant with Mavin’s child, he forced her to get an abortion and told her he would never accept her. Unlike his father, he had standards. She is simply his plaything; she does not have any qualities to be his wife. So, Tian helped her through this process. He wanted to take care of the baby and hoped she could keep it. But because of Mavin, that dream was crushed, and Tian had deep resentment against Mavin. Tian wanted revenge and took it out on Shutter, Mavin’s son. He beat Shutter so severely that the boy went into cardiac arrest. Another servant, Joke, saw Tian punching Shutter to death but didn’t stop him. In fact, he was kind of happy and pretended that he got beaten up too. Actually, Joke had his own grudge against Shutter. Years ago, Shutter had killed a man in a drunk driving accident, and to save him, Joke went to jail. It felt like his life didn’t matter; only Shutter’s did, just because he was rich. When Mavin found out about this incident, he decided to kill Tian. He was so cruel that he wanted Joke to kill him. But that wasn’t necessary because, to save his friend, Tian jumped off a bridge and killed himself. Kaew and Joke never forgave Mavin for this.
When Phupat found out that the company was to be in Mavin’s name, he completely lost it. After all the hard work he’d put in to build the empire, this felt like a brutal betrayal. Mavin treated him even worse after that. He made Phupat work as a mere worker, kept him out of board meetings, and even made him enter the office through the back door. It was unbearable. Kaimook provided Phupat with evidence showing that Mavin was the last person to see his father before he died. Phupat then asked the police to launch an investigation, but Mavin used his influence and wealth to stop it from happening, as it would jeopardize his reputation. Mavin didn’t stop there—he fired Phupat, kicked him out of the house, and forced him into early retirement by making sure he moved far away. When Shutter needed a heart transplant and was in the hospital, Phupat planned to take Araya’s share of the will to become rich enough to buy the company from Mavin. With his father-in-law’s help, Phupat got the transplant. But Mavin played him again by telling Phupat that Araya had given him all her shares except for one percent, which she had left for Phupat. Phupat knew he had to take revenge, so he decided to kill Mavin with the help of the servants, who all hated Mavin for his cruelty towards them. Mavin wanted to partner with a man named Carlos and his jewelry company, so Phupat joined their meeting. While Carlos was busy with Kaimook, Phupat and Joke took Mavin out on another yacht, headed to the middle of the ocean. With Kaimook’s help, they spiked Mavin’s drink with drugs beforehand. Once Mavin lost consciousness, they dumped his body into the water and blew up the boat. The police eventually found Mavin’s body, but he was still alive. Phupat couldn’t let this chance slip by. He ordered the ambulance driver to take Mavin to the best hospital in the city, but when the driver said Mavin might die on the way, Phupat said he didn’t care. He bribed the driver to make sure Mavin died along the way, and he did!
Until now, the servants in the house thought Phupat was the lesser evil. Even though he had his flaws, he didn’t seem to torture the servants like the others did. But they couldn’t have been more wrong. Once Phupat took control of the company, he decided to sell it because he saw it as his cruel father’s legacy, which he didn’t care about. He never wanted to be a diamond merchant anyway. Even when potential buyers couldn’t believe he genuinely wanted to sell this billion-dollar company, Phupat made sure to include the mansion in the deal to show how serious he was. This act revealed how deeply his father’s neglect and arrogance had affected him emotionally. Phupat was so determined to win the battle against his father’s legacy that he didn’t care about the company or the wealth anymore. It was all about proving to himself that he could win against his evil brother. His cruelty didn’t stop there. When he discovered that Mavin had faked the will, he didn’t just push Araya out of the house; he divorced her without a cent. It was like the days of him being somewhat decent were over. Now that he was the master of the house, he felt the need to carry on the legacy of cruelty and dominance.
But how could Phupat sell the house when it wasn’t even in his name? Remember how Kaimook was the sole owner of Roongroj Thevasatitpaisarn’s assets? And you might be wondering who killed Roongroj. Believe it or not, it was Kaimook herself, and she had her reasons. I’m glad the series didn’t just focus on solving the mystery of “whodunit.” Instead, it highlighted one of the most heinous issues of all: class discrimination. When Kaimook first entered the house, she saw just how cruel and pathetic the environment was. Even though they called the servants “family,” they were treated like nothing. If they were late, their pay was cut, and they had to beg for every little thing. They were treated like dogs, expected to be at their feet, and even barked when told. It was awful. Kaimook was okay with it until she met Dao, another servant who was close to Master Roongroj.
Dao was used and tortured by him so much that she ended up committing suicide. Kaimook didn’t want that to be her fate. So, she decided to pretend to be in love with Roongroj. She knew how little regard he had for his sons, so she used that to her advantage. She convinced him that she would give him an heir who would obey his legacy, and by doing so, she ended up making herself the owner of his assets. When her plan succeeded, she made sure to kill him. She spiked his drink with the same drug she used to help Phupat kill Mavin. When Roongroj loses consciousness and falls from the balcony, the last footage shows Mavin entering his father’s cabin for the final time, implying he is the one who killed him. How did Kaimook get that footage? The entire gang of servants had been recording the masters’ misdeeds as evidence. They planned to use it to fight back and ensure the house remained theirs.
In the ending of Master of the House, all the original owners of the house were driven out, and the mansion became the property of the servants with Kaimook’s help. There’s probably not going to be Season 2 of Master of the House, as the only master left, Phupat, was killed by a thug at the end. On the other hand, Araya ended up as a struggling actress, while Phupat’s wife, Padcha, lived alone and had lost contact with their daughter. It’s almost poetic justice, as they got a taste of the mistreatment they had once dished out. With the servants holding enough evidence to drag them through the mud, it’s clear that the servants will always win against them. And that makes for a perfect ending to the series!
