Now it’s a year later, and the woman who gave birth is pushing a stroller, her hair in a different style and dyed blonde. The women she meets for cocktails in the park call her Gloria (Najwa Nimri, Money Heist), but Blanca (Macarena Gomez) and Alicia (Ella Kweku) seem confused when their new friend is hesitant about celebrating the first birthday of her baby son, who she calls Hugo. Meanwhile, Aitana (Carla Campra) listens to a lecture at university, and learns about the Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic fertility figurine. “A mother’s love,” the professor says, “is like a scorpion’s tale: flexible, precise, and full of poison.”

Aitana is introduced to Blanca, Alicia, and Caterina (Alba Flores), another new neighbor, as an au pair for Hugo. But later, as Gloria works in her stained glass studio at home, it’s clear that the young woman is actually her daughter. Aitana also refers to “Hugo” as “Nico,” which gets her a scolding. Gloria then unlocks the basement room where Abel (Ivan Pellicer, Elite) stays. (No wonder she didn’t want to throw a party for the baby.) The lock is for his protection, Gloria says; it’s so he won’t go out during the day. “It’s safer at night.”

Gloria tells both Aitana and Abel that all of these false names and foisted identities are key to their survival, key to their future together in Canada. It’s important, she tells them, that they avoid arousing suspicion. But Aitana can’t resist playing an open piano in the conservatory, where she takes an immediate liking to Marco (Alvaro Rico, also of Elite). And for that matter, suspicions about the group have already been raised: the arrival of Caterina and her husband German (Alex Garcia) in the neighborhood was not by chance.

Drifty, vaguely horror movie-like music accompanies the early moments of Holy Family and periodically thereafter, usually when Gloria is working to establish the false life of this person she’s created. And while it’s not like she’s going to suddenly be revealed as a slasher, it doesn’t take too long to discern that this woman is neither the person she’s pretending to be nor a stranger to violence in her past. The spindly storyline of Family keeps adding nicks to the narrative – for the viewer, it’s like trying to wrap up a sheaf of barbed wire by hand – and with each bit of blood drawn, there’s more to enjoy about this strange and captivating thriller.

That quote about a mother’s love being like a scorpion’s tale? Telling. Very telling. Mothers’ actions are at the center of Holy Family, from Gloria’s fraught relationship with her older children and being mistaken for Hugo’s grandmother, to Blanca’s detachment from her troubled young son, Alicia’s hope for an adoption notice, and Caterina, who is the superficial image of a serene young mom while also existing as a different kind of nightmare for another and completely separate mother. To watch all of this fall together over Holy Family’s eight episodes feels like it’ll be more satisfying than a fresh pot of homemade vegetable soup.
