The biggest strength of The Drop is its decision to move away from the drug-trade story that defined Snowfall and explore the birth of West Coast hip-hop. Wanda sees music as a possible way to create a better future, while her cousin Lamar Kinsey (Asante Blackk) is a talented young DJ trying to develop his own sound. Their ambitions constantly collide with gang culture, street politics and the difficult realities of South Central Los Angeles.
Gail Bean is particularly strong as Wanda. She gives the character confidence, determination and vulnerability, making her transformation from her troubled past into an ambitious music insider one of the show’s most interesting storylines. Asante Blackk also stands out as Lamar, bringing youthful energy to the series. Critics have specifically praised both performances.
The show’s greatest advantage is its authentic sense of time and place. Music isn’t simply background decoration; it represents opportunity and escape for characters who have very few options.
