High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam Review 2026 Tv Show Series Cast Crew Online

High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam is an eight-episode TNT political thriller starring Joel Kinnaman as CIA analyst John Nixon and Waleed Zuaiter as Saddam Hussein. Inspired by Nixon’s memoir Debriefing the President, the series follows the 2003 hunt for Saddam and Nixon’s eventual interrogation of the captured Iraqi dictator.

Review

The series has an intriguing premise because it focuses on a lesser-known perspective of the Iraq War: the CIA officer who actually sat across from Saddam Hussein after his capture. Rather than being only a military thriller, High Value Target examines the intelligence failures surrounding the search for weapons of mass destruction and the political consequences of the invasion.

Joel Kinnaman gives the series a strong central performance. John Nixon begins as a desk-based analyst and gradually becomes directly involved in the hunt, giving Kinnaman plenty of room to portray his character’s ambition, uncertainty and growing doubts about the mission. Critics have generally found Kinnaman compelling even when the surrounding character development is weaker.

The real highlight, however, is Waleed Zuaiter’s portrayal of Saddam Hussein. Once Saddam is captured, the interrogation scenes become much more compelling. The conversations between Nixon and Hussein create psychological tension without depending entirely on conventional action. Several reviews have singled out Zuaiter’s performance and the interrogation sequences as the strongest parts of the series.

The show’s biggest weakness is pacing. The hunt itself takes a significant portion of the early episodes, while Saddam is not captured until around the middle of Episode 3. Some critics feel that the eight-episode format stretches material that might have worked better as a shorter drama or feature film.

Another limitation is the show’s attempt to balance historical fact with dramatic storytelling. Because the story deals with real people and one of the most consequential events of modern history, the fictionalized elements can sometimes feel awkward. Nevertheless, the series succeeds when it concentrates on the moral and political questions surrounding the Iraq War rather than simply presenting an action-oriented manhunt.

Final Verdict

High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam is a thought-provoking political thriller with an excellent central performance and gripping interrogation scenes. Its slow beginning and uneven supporting characters prevent it from becoming a truly outstanding historical drama, but the subject matter and Kinnaman-Zuaiter dynamic make it worth watching.

Rating: ⭐ 7.5/10
