It’s in the dreams of Win (James-Teeradon Supapunpinyo), who with his friends Game (Peach-Pachara Chirathivat) and Dear (Ally-Achiraya Nitibhon), barely missed jail time for their “merits for money” scheme at Phumram Temple. He is awakened to see corrupt politician Ae (Donut-Manatsanun Phanlerdwongsakul), who was brought in by Game on their previous scheme, sitting with his mother.

Ae promises someone will take care of his “old” mother while he works with her on a new project. She promised the same thing to Game, that someone will take care of his wife and daughter. But what she tells them later is that they’re really hired thugs.

Ae brings them out to a field where she wants to build a hospital, her biggest merit project yet. But she needs to raise a billion baht (about $31 million) in six months, and she knows that Win and Game can make that ambitious amount, given what they did with Phumram. If they don’t make the amount, Ae’s thugs will take care of their families, and not in a good way.

In the meantime, Dear is making her way to the airport to go stay with her father in New York, but one of Ae’s thugs intercepts her. Game and Win tell Ae to let her go, but that means they each have more of a burden of money to raise.

Ae brings them to a dingy office in Nong Khal Temple, where she wants them to apply their marketing skills. As Game decries their fate, Win tries to focus on the one big scheme they can put together to generate the most money, but not so fast that Ae disposes of them as soon as the goal is reached.

There’s a bit of a different sense with Season 2 of The Believers, as it seems that Win, Game and Dear — who we assume will eventually come back to Thailand after her visit with her American father, thinking the heat is off — are now under the gun, needing to make money for Ae and not themselves. It’s still a story about religion and money and how the two intertwine, but now it feels more like a thriller where the moneymakers need to make their money in order to save their families and themselves.

There are some side stories, namely how Dear fares in America, having to deal with her young stepmother and a guy who hits on her at a restaurant where she works, and how Monk Dol (Pup-Patchai Pakdeesusuk) tries to navigate life now that he’s no longer living a monastic existence. But, for the most part, the story is going to be about the massive project that Game dismissively calls “The world’s largest Pho tree” and which of the monks at the new temple will go along with it and which will sniff out how corrupt it really is.
