The Devil’s Mouth 2026 Movie Review
The Devil’s Mouth is a familiar survival thriller given a strong new location. Five friends and their guide enter a cave system in Thailand shortly after a storm, only to discover that a bull shark has been washed into its flooded passages.
The film works best when it concentrates on the environment. The narrow tunnels, unstable water levels, limited lighting and enclosed chambers are often more frightening than the shark. The production design gives different sections of the cave enough visual identity to keep the action understandable, and the extended water work adds genuine physical discomfort.
Kathryn Newton is the standout as Sara. She begins as the cautious, practical member of the group and gradually emerges as the final girl. Her preparation is repeatedly mocked or ignored, but the life jacket, first-aid skills, map and willingness to listen eventually become essential. Newton handles the progression well without turning Sara into a completely different character during the final act.
Lana Condor commits fully to Max, Sara’s controlling and increasingly reckless best friend. The conflict between them gives the film more emotional substance than a simple sequence of shark attacks, although Max is written so aggressively that the relationship can feel one-sided. The supporting characters are recognisable but underdeveloped, particularly the guide Wat, who should have had greater importance.
The shark is effective when partially hidden, but sometimes seems implausibly devoted to hunting this particular group through an elaborate cave system. The PG-13 violence also limits the impact of a few attack sequences.
Despite those weaknesses, the film is tense, visually clear and refreshingly direct. It understands its premise and does not bury it beneath unnecessary mythology or sequel preparation. A solid cave thriller, a decent shark movie and a good showcase for Newton as a resourceful survivor.
