It would have been better if it was just smut. But it’s not. The show seems to try to be different things at once, and touch several topics at once, but ultimately wastes your time. For the most part.
There is a topic of open marriage. But it’s mostly to support infidelity, so that there is no need to explore the guilt. It’s not really explored besides a short “forum”, that M had (was this really her name?). The same topic is also used as an entryway to one of the bigger sublots: teacher and student relationships. There are some scenes, where this starts to be explored, with ideas “they are both adults, and it’s consensual”, “one of them has the power”, “young ones are too touchy about the subject” and others, but all of those end up skin-dip.
M’s relationship with David suggested actual love, but the way it was presented looked as if it was actually a lie. Sid’s relationship with her partner seemed… Complicated, let’s put it that way, but the topic was closed with “I’m an adult, I do not have to answer to you”. Cynthia’s postnatal depression suggested to be a big topic, especially considering, what we learnt in the last episode, but it felt like it was there just to be there. There was no discussion about it whatsoever, completely brushed off.
If this was just smut – it probably would have been fine. I would have just thought, that I am not the target audience. It would have explained the “horny academics” vibes from the faculty, too. But if it is supposed to be smut, then why bring up these topics at all? Yes, I understand that M’s desire for Vlad is the focus of the story, but then maybe brush away serious topics through her own words like “I don’t care”. Well, I guess they kind of did it in some scenes, but those were forced to get us to the last 2 episodes. And BTW, if the roles were reversed there, there would be so much more hate towards this show.
To be honest, while I did not like any of the characters, I did like the way the narration was done. Some jokes were quite good. And in, fact, I hoped that maybe half of this will end up pure imagination. Or that Vladimir is some sort of psycho. None of that happened, though, and that saddens me, because something like that could potentially make a better ending that what we really got.
