The Pact of Silence 2023 Movie Review
“Did you say monster, I only see a woman” The story of a doctor priest understanding a woman in prison for murder and solving the mysteries he encounters.
Identical twins are seen in cinema, with examples such as “Vertigo”, “Dead Ringers” and “Adaptation”, and if they are not in the comedy category, this situation usually involves tension, conflict, loyalty, etc. A biological situation that is discussed together with concepts. In this movie, this is the source of tension and secrets, and therefore, an atmosphere has been tried to be created by using abundantly interesting features such as twins getting sick together, as well as mysterious answers to the questions of who is who and who is doing what.
While the secrets that separated the twins in the past, one of whom is in prison and the other is in a Catholic Carmelite church, and in a sense, both of them are behind closed doors, are revealed in the middle of the film, what the real truth is becomes apparent at the end of the film, and although the script frequently falters, the film manages to keep the interest alive, especially during the discovery of this truth. . Gerard Depardieu, who makes films constantly and reminds us of the stars of the Turkish cinema of the 60s in this respect (he starred in a total of eight films, including this film in 2003), performs a rather mediocre and dull performance throughout the film. He cannot convey to the audience either the seriousness of the cleric in his role or the passion that we cannot understand when and how it occurred. Élodie Bouchez, on the other hand, is a name that carries the real weight of the film and gives at least a passable appearance next to Depardieu.
The film, which does not deliver the tension it promises and often seems to expect the audience to put together the presented materials themselves, where the plot sometimes becomes unconvincing, and whose last episode seems to be inspired by the movie “Vertigo”, is primarily for pure thriller fans. The film, which has an unnecessary ending like a horror movie that says there will be a sequel with the image of a new family with twin children in the last frames, seems like a wasted opportunity with its structure that is not shocking enough and becomes unnecessarily heavy at times. Still, the strange appeal of some parts of the film must be acknowledged.
