Mortality is what happens when a comedian outlives his own relevance, but refuses the mercy of retirement. Gervais should have left two specials ago, waved goodbye to the culture he once skewered, and preserved the illusion that he still had something urgent to say. Instead, he returns to Netflix to perform the stand-up equivalent of yelling at a comment section.

The special’s central insight appears to be that context is for cowards. Jokes about “racist pedophiles” capped with “do the black ones too” are delivered as if they’re acts of radical bravery, when they’re really just the comedy version of mashing the reset button on history. Gervais still clings to the fantasy that offending everyone equally is the same as thinking deeply, a belief made possible only by the cushioning effects of wealth, whiteness, and universal cultural immunity.

His ponderings on hate crimes are the philosophical low point. Asking why sentencing should differ when “a life is a life” sounds profound until you realise it erases the entire purpose of hate crime legislation: the terrorising of communities, not just individuals. It’s moral flattening disguised as enlightenment, a take that can only feel clever if violence has never had your name, face, or identity attached to it.

By the end, Mortality isn’t about death at all. It’s about creative stagnation, about a performer trapped in a loop where provocation substitutes for insight and repetition passes for courage. The most transgressive thing Gervais could do now wouldn’t be another “offensive” joke. It would be announcing his retirement and meaning it.
