Asking why sentencing should differ when “a life is a life” sounds profound until you realise it erases the entire purpose of hate crime legislation: the terrorising of communities, not just individuals. It’s moral flattening disguised as enlightenment, a take that can only feel clever if violence has never had your name, face, or identity attached to it.
By the end, Mortality isn’t about death at all. It’s about creative stagnation, about a performer trapped in a loop where provocation substitutes for insight and repetition passes for courage. The most transgressive thing Gervais could do now wouldn’t be another “offensive” joke. It would be announcing his retirement and meaning it.
