I was genuinely looking forward to this adaptation, particularly given how powerful William Golding’s novel remains. However, across its four episodes, it never quite captures the raw intensity or psychological depth that made the original so compelling. What unfolds feels less like a faithful interpretation and more like a stylised reimagining that often loses sight of the story’s core.
The early episodes struggle to establish any real sense of fear or isolation, with the boys’ predicament lacking urgency. It often feels closer to a structured outing than a genuine fight for survival. While there is some improvement as the series progresses – particularly when the threat begins to take shape and tensions rise – the descent into savagery never fully convinces. Key moments that should feel shocking or inevitable instead come across as underdeveloped.
A recurring issue is the heavy-handed presentation. Character dynamics feel rigid, with moral lines drawn too early and too clearly, leaving little room for ambiguity or evolution. The score is persistently intrusive, often overwhelming quieter moments, while the glossy, stylised visuals detract from the rawness the setting demands. There’s a sense throughout that style has been prioritised over substance, with lingering shots and added flourishes padding out what should have been a far more intense and focused drama.
There are occasional glimpses of what might have been – moments of genuine tension, and a strong performance from Lox Pratt in particular – but they are too fleeting to leave a lasting impression. By the final episode, what should have been a brutal and unforgettable climax instead feels strangely muted.
Ultimately, this feels like a missed opportunity. It never quite finds the balance between modern reinterpretation and the primal simplicity of the original story. At times, it even borders on the unintentionally tame – more “Nightmare on Sesame Street” than a descent into chaos.
