Truly, ice dancing is a sport that has captivated the world through and through and with good reason. After all, it is a genuine expression of what perfection looks like in sports, and that alone is alluring. Since we all strive to achieve perfection in some aspect of our lives, and seeing a quest for it, and seeing it play out on the ice now and again, gives us hope. But there are more reasons as to why we tune into ice dancing when it is available to watch. Because it’s also enchanting, it’s truly art in motion, thanks to the incredible work that ice dancers put into their performances and routines, and oddly enough, it is the dancers and their work that truly draws us in.

Because let’s be honest, there is an air of mystery surrounding them. For when they perform at the Olympics or other global events, we learn about them quickly before they take the ice, and we only fawn over the end result of what we see. So, we really know nothing about them or the sport that they clearly love, and we would love to know what drives them, what goes into creating routines that have us texting friends in a frenzy or sharing a shocked expression with anyone in our home over what we’ve just seen. Well, it just so happens that a new three-part documentary series on Netflix works to offer that at last, by taking us behind the curtain to properly explore every aspect of the world of ice dancing in Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing.

The story works to accomplish this by taking us back in time a bit. Wherein we meet three ice dancing pairs consisting of Evan and Madi, Laurence and Guillaume, and Piper and Paul. All of whom are vying for a chance to compete in the Olympics and be the best at their sport, and this three-part journey takes us around the globe as they work to achieve their goals and deal with the physical and emotional stresses that accompany this life. It is what we witness as that journey gets underway that brings about a dynamic story that truly explores what goes into becoming an ice dancing champion, and the first thing we learn… is what goes into perfection and the routines we love, is incredible work.

Much of which is physical in nature. Since these athletes work hard to maintain a peak physical physique, and much like anyone else in the world of sports, they work hard to perfect their craft and spend hours on the ice to ensure they glide when they skate and that their routines are flawless. For the scrutiny they face demands the perfection we are in awe of, and that really does provide us with information we’ve never known about the sport. About how routines are constructed and how much input goes into that from coaching teams and advisors, and how much work actually goes into being an ice dancer. Plus it even touches upon controversies and scandals that currently plague the sport to present us with the light and dark of it all. But as mentioned, this documentary goes all out in its exploration and has more to offer us.

Since it takes time to really get to know this trio of dancing pairs. For we learn a lot about who they are, what drives them, what they want to see in the sport… all of it. To the point where we learn about the dancers featured here in a supremely intimate manner, and that brings about… some powerful moments. Where see them as people and not gods of the ice, who have anxieties, fears, and have made real sacrifices to be where they are, and have genuine ghosts that haunt them regularly, and truly want to know if perfection can be achieved on the ice, and what that will provide them with on an emotional level. Which just adds incredible depth and passion to both this documentary and the sport as a whole.

All of which brings forth an engaging and refreshing journey, one that hopefully inspires more stories in this vein. Simply because this is a phenomenal documentary. One that truly showcases the sport in the raw, and by humanizing its dancers and the work that goes into it, it trades mystique for awe. For now, we want to see their drive in action, see them bounce back from mistakes and inspire us as they do here. Because this really does make it clear how much this sport matters to the world and those who fight within it, and we here at NTG hope you give this amazing journey a look on Netflix, to add context and depth to the games ahead.
