Cold Storage 2026 Movie Review

There’s not a whole lot of originality about the basic premise for Cold Storage: how many times have we seen films about deadly micro-organisms threatening humanity? That said, I still had a good time with this goofy horror comedy, thanks to likeable performances from its leads (Barbarian’s Georgina Campbell, Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, and Liam Neeson) and a whole load of gloopy silliness, as a parasitic fungus transforms people (and animals) into zombies that have a nasty habit of erupting in a mess of slime and body parts.

Keery and Campbell play Teacake and Naomi, security guards at a self-storage company located on the site of an old military base. When a highly contagious fungus – stored deep in the bowels of the facility – escapes containment, an aging bio-terror operative, played by Neeson, must try to neutralise the threat before it gets out of control. Keery and Campbell share good chemistry, but Neeson is the standout here, getting all the best lines as the grizzled tough guy who isn’t averse to detonating a nuke to get the job done, much to the consternation of the youngsters caught in the midst of the outbreak.

The film isn’t perfect: there’s some dodgy CGI in use – a few of the special effects wouldn’t look out of place in a film from twenty years ago – David Koepp’s script delivers little in the way of genuine surprises, and the direction by Jonny Campbell is merely workmanlike, as one might expect from someone whose career has been primarily in TV. But the film was never intended to be high art… it’s a ‘not-to-be-taken-seriously, Friday night, kick back, have a few beers and enjoy’ kind of film – simple escapism that doesn’t tax the brain, carefully crafted to provide a few giggles and plenty of gross out moments. And that’s exactly what it does.
