First of all, let’s give the devil his due: This is a watchable, moderately entertaining, colorful and vibrant show. The locations and the photography, coupled with the smooth editing and pacing, are top notch. Its priorities will momentarily dumb you down so well that you won’t even notice how void the protagonists are. The acting is great within the confines of what the producers have decided on selling to the audience. No one is trying to be too real for the job, and no one is falling short.

Generously, I can argue that it is like a FRIENDS reunion that has been filtered to make sure nothing will feel genuinely heartfelt, funny or deep. Like, an intact, fully organic banana skin with no actual banana in it, because, who needs the banana anymore?

I will prefer not to compare it to Alan Alda’s original movie of the same name, because I don’t think it matters how close or how far to the source material these things are. Streamers want reboots and big names like Tina Fey and Steve Carell can sure carry such weight, especially when the script is bulletproof already.

Basically, this is about a mid-to-old-age group of three couples, one of which will be going through a bitter breakup due to the man’s… Yeah, whatever it’s called, it’s the guy who initiates this.

These people are in no serious struggle as they seem to have more than adequate funds to focus solely on having a good time. They aren’t too rich to detach us from the kind of emotional decay they are in, but, hey, there are new terms for such moods nowadays, so, no, their apolitical, carefree, self-centered way of existence is not really a soul-eating monster, but merely the ultimate goal of random, civilized folks.

Ageing has not granted them any kind of wisdom or tranquility. They are on the rebound and always seeking for more (of whatever suits them), which is fine, too, because their kids have kind of grown up, and that only means they can begin to act like kids again themselves, as this is the proposed cycle of life for such productions.

The segment of the society they live in is way above any racial divisions, which is great of course, and it is also great that we don’t get to understand what jobs these people have held and what wheels they have been parts of in order to have established their places in this Logan’s Run-esque utopia that exists as if the actual world does not. Had we gone so deep, we could find disturbing things about them, God forbid!

As is mandatory in this age, one of the couples is gay, which is great, and the not-so-proudly straight majority of the audience is by now so well-trained that they know better than fast forwarding the homoerotical displays, even if they are watching it alone, knowing full well such self-editing would be heresy, making them phobic of some sorts.

There is no issue with the 6 people of the 3 couples being distributed as 4 husbands and 2 wives, because fair representation of females was yesterday’s issue, deemed overcome despite the fact of visible mathematics here, and if we are to note that something was off with the formula, it has to be about why there wasn’t trans representation or why some other 0.1% minority did not get its fair 20% share out of a story about couples. We are way past the ancient understanding that Man-Woman relationships come with their biological facts, giving them their particular dyamics. A relationship is a relationship, period. It can be between any two things, and even if you are adapting something that was about men and women, you now better strip the meat off of it to make sure the current dynamics will be dry and neutral enough to match that of any two things.

Also, somewhat paradoxically, depicting the gay couple as being in a non-committed relationship will no longer be seen as slander against the gay community, because “not being able to be loyal to your lifetime partner” is just a lifestyle nowadays, labeled as “in an open relationship”, an innocent term that washes away any stigma that could have come with another choice word.

So, unlike the garden of Eden, there is no good or evil in the realm of these people. It is just their self-centered characters that co-exist in peaceful harmony, smoothly and friendly dictating to their audience of real people what is best in life, setting them examples of how the new age privileges of ideal, politically-correct-but-fully-apolitical citizens should behave when handling their domestic issues.

Such shows are probably good for people who are actually going through rough patches, because they depict perfectly well how dull and devoid of meaning their lives, romances and fixations would have become, had they overcome the serious obstacles of modern day survival.
