Kevin Bacon, a reliably charismatic presence, takes on the mantle of Hub Halloran, a demon-tracking bounty hunter in “The Bondsman,” a new horror-comedy series that, according to Variety, sends its star “to Hell and Back.” Unfortunately, the true infernal journey is endured not by Bacon, but by the audience, forced to navigate a soul-crushing landscape of bland, recycled television for a full thirty minutes each episode.

For viewers like this learned and wise atheist (and likely many others who’ve been thoroughly inoculated against demonic premises by a glut of similar content – gestures vaguely at the overflowing graveyard of shows like Stan Against Evil, Preacher, Lucifer, Good Omens, Locke & Key, American Gods, and even the once-fresh Stranger Things – what is the phrase? Oh right, done to death), “The Bondsman” offers a particularly tedious experience.

One can only lament Blumhouse’s decision to double down on played-out demonic horror with the same tired enthusiasm that ALF once brought to pondering the vast emptiness of space. While the AI-assisted CGI demons are admittedly “decent” in a purely technical sense, they contribute precisely zero innovation to a genre already choked with grotesque entities. It’s the same old hellscape, just with slightly shinier horns.

However, amidst this swamp of predictable tropes, two flickering embers offer a faint glimmer of hope. Jennifer Nettles injects a much-needed dose of dimension into the proceedings, her presence providing a welcome contrast to the surrounding monotony. Even more surprisingly, the original songwriting from Jennifer Nettles ad Kevin Bacon himself, coupled with their vocal performances, offers a genuine reason to keep slogging through the demonic drudgery. It’s almost endearing to witness Bacon vicariously exploring the musical path not taken, even if it’s within this otherwise unremarkable series.

Ultimately, “The Bondsman” feels like a missed opportunity. While Bacon and Nettles offer intriguing elements, they are largely stranded in a sea of derivative content. Unless you have an insatiable appetite for the same old demonic battles and a particular fondness for Kevin Bacon’s musical aspirations, prepare for your own personal descent into television purgatory.
