Triviaverse is a quiz game that tests your knowledge of everything from pop culture and architecture to science and sports. The quiz features questions like “Which of these artists has ‘The Rapper’ in his name?”, to which you’re given the multiple choice option of Tyler or Chance. Questions like that are mixed with more educational ones like “Which word describes the process of a larger atom splitting into smaller ones?” (Fission!) The “academic” questions don’t get much harder than that, but there are a lot of specific, niche questions thrown into to trip you up, like who the highest-scoring player in the English Premier League is (Alan Shearer) or identifying all the original Skittles flavors (they would be orange, lemon, lime, grape and strawberry).

If you’re playing the single player version, the game is divided into three minute-long rounds, the two-player version is two minute-long rounds per person. The goal is to beat your own score or beat your player 2. You don’t get to give your players a name or avatar, you’re simply “Player 1” or “Player 2.” In theory the questions get harder as the rounds progress, but I found every round to be an even mix of kind of obvious general knowledge mixed with questions about books, movies, and yes, candy flavors, that I wasn’t sure how to answer.

My husband, a.k.a. my Player 2 For All Eternity, is much more of a gamer than I am, while I am a very competitive Trivial Pursuit player, so together we had a lot of opinions on how this game could have been better.

First, I understand that Netflix is not a gaming system and their interactive options are limited, and those limitations make the user experience a lot less robust than playing a similar game on a different system. While the game does remember your most recent high score and it challenges you to beat it, there’s no opportunity to create an avatar or a user name, or otherwise engage with or personalize it “There’s no gamification of this game. There’s no character you can save up to buy outfits for!” my husband offered. This is true. The only character is the taunting trivia master (who doesn’t even speak, the game is entirely text-based), and his purpose is basically just to double dog dare you to beat him.

There’s also the minor annoyance that if you have Apple TV, Netflix’s interactive programming will not work on your television. My user experience for this game was on my phone, which may just be the more optimal way to play though, because it’s such a quick, non-committal kind of game. “Would I sit down an play this at night for an hour? No,” my Player 2 said. “If we were sitting in a waiting room and had literally nothing else to do? Maybe.”

So yeah, this game is fine. It’s a quick diversion if you need a mental break, but there’s not much to it.
