The Åre Murders Review 2025 Tv Show Series Cast Crew Online
As the cold weather lingers, there’s nothing better than getting wrapped up in a gripping Nordic crime thriller. The Åre Murders is the perfect winter watch, taking us away from the usual city-based crime dramas and into the breathtaking yet eerie Swedish mountains of Åre.
Based on Viveca Sten’s novels, the series is structured into six episodes, split into two distinct stories. This makes it easy to binge in one or two sittings, while also helping viewers keep track of the unfolding mysteries. To make things even clearer, we’ve broken our review into the two separate storylines.
The first half of the series kicks off with Hidden in Snow, introducing us to Hanna Ahlander, played by Carla Sehn. It’s refreshing to see Sehn take the lead, especially for UK audiences who may recognize her from smaller roles in Love & Anarchy and Anxious People (both on Netflix).
Hanna arrives in Åre on a personal retreat, having been dumped by her boyfriend and facing potential suspension from her job at the Stockholm police force. The scenic surroundings and her cosy chalet should offer a fresh start—but that doesn’t last long. When a local girl goes missing, Hanna can’t resist getting involved. She soon teams up with lead detective Daniel Lindskog (Kardo Razzazi, Top Dog) to unravel a case that quickly turns into a murder investigation.
What makes this mystery compelling is the way it carefully pieces together the events leading up to the crime, keeping you guessing along the way. The cast is another highlight, featuring familiar faces like Moa Gammel (Breaking Surface), Olle Sarri (Snabba Cash), and Young Royals star Frida Argento—who isn’t the only cast member from that series to appear here.
Hanna, initially met with skepticism from Daniel, proves to be relentless, throwing herself into the case with unwavering determination. As their partnership grows, so does the intensity of the investigation.
Without giving too much away, this story wraps up within the first three episodes—before the series shifts to its second mystery. A body is discovered frozen in the ice, pulling Hanna back into action alongside Daniel as she decides to stay in Åre a little longer.
This second mystery is more complex, introducing a fresh set of characters—many of whom will be familiar to fans of Nordic dramas. Agnes Kittelsen and Jon Øigarden (both from Exit), Amalia Holm (Midsummer’s Night), Björn Elgerd (Opponent), and Young Royals star Samuel Astor all play key roles, adding layers to the unfolding story.
Amalia Holm delivers a standout performance as a character clearly hiding something, and when the truth is revealed, it’s utterly heartbreaking. Meanwhile, Samuel Astor’s character brings unexpected complications as a love interest for one of the police officers, adding further tension to the plot.
Both stories maintain a steady pace, keeping viewers engaged with dark twists and sudden, brutal moments that hit hard when they arrive. If there’s one aspect that feels unnecessary, it’s the growing closeness between Hanna and Daniel. With Daniel being a married man and a new father, their dynamic occasionally feels uncomfortable—almost predatory on Hanna’s part. While this relationship may be more developed in the books, on screen it feels forced and morally questionable, making you rethink both characters.
That aside, The Åre Murders delivers an exciting trip to the Swedish mountains, with stunning location shots and a compelling lead performance from Carla Sehn. Hopefully, this won’t be the last time we see Åre’s chilling mysteries unfold.
