A world collapses for Sole ( Asia Ortega ) when she learns that her husband Ángel is dead. In addition to Fernan ( Álvaro Rico ), the lawyer Mercedes ( Patricia Vico ), who previously helped Ángel again and again, also plays a major role. Netflix and its sequels is a story all of its own, as we all know. On the one hand, series are sold in rows, including those that enjoy a great reputation. At the same time, other titles are continued, which make you wonder what the whole thing is about. Same with Sky High . The film, which was released in Germany almost two years ago, was solid, but not in such a way that you absolutely had to see more. Netflix obviously saw things differently. Not only that there is a reunion with the characters. The sequel is even in the form of a series. But instead of telling how the protagonist from last time will continue, this one is dead right from the start. Instead, Sole, who was only a supporting character before, is suddenly the main character.
It’s a bit confusing at first, especially since Sole was one of the few characters last time out who wasn’t part of the crime world. In terms of process, the film and series are similar. Both times, Sky High tells how a person gets involved with crime and becomes more and more drawn into it. At Sole, the motivation is a little different. For one thing, she has to take care of her young son, while Ángel was thinking of himself first and foremost. The Spanish series also tells how the protagonist tries to emancipate herself from her father. This makes them a fundamentally better identification figure. Although one shouldn’t expect too much from the character drawing, Sole isn’t exactly exciting. But that’s nobody here.
The work that screenwriter Jorge Guerricaechevarría ( code word: Kaiser ) saved in this regard, he preferred to invest in the character constellations. They are particularly complicated to construct. As if the story of a young and aspiring criminal wasn’t enough, all sorts of other people are integrated and somehow connected. That’s completely exaggerated in places when there are lots of dark secrets and any intrigues. sky high sometimes reminds more of a soap opera than a gangster thriller. Apparently in Spain it was felt that in this way the complexity was increased. Instead, the series is rather exhausting. Even the film had its difficulties with wanting to stay tuned to the end. With the seven episodes, it’s even more difficult.
One problem with this is that there is again a lot of talk about crimes, but these are hardly seen. Too little is happening there. The film partly compensated for this moderately interesting content with its atmosphere. In the production version, however, this works less well. Of course, to a certain extent, there is still curiosity about how it will end. With so many people sharpening their knives behind each other’s backs and you never know who’s going to betray who next, that’s not a bad scenario. Nevertheless, if you weren’t a big fan of the film, you do n’t necessarily have to watch Sky High . There are clearly more gripping productions in this area that actually deserve a sequel.
“Sky High” ties in with the film of the same name, but this time lets the widow of the protagonist at the time descend into the world of crime. Fans look in, the rest can leave it alone. The characters are still poorly drawn and the crimes are unnervingly rare. This again makes the series a game of patience, despite soap opera borrowings.
