Reign Supreme Review 2022 Tv Show Series Cast Crew Online
The title » THE WORLD OF TOMORROW« sounds like science fiction, but – from the point of view of the audience – seems like an answer to the »no future« of the British punk movement. At the end of the 1970s, Daniel Bigeault, not yet of legal age, traveled to the USA. The Frenchman collects funk and soul records and hopes to one day work as a disc jockey. His interest in music led him to the first hip-hop parties. Hip hop is more than a style of music. A subculture of dance, poetry, art, fashion, born in the black districts. Bigeault is one of the first to bring the phenomenon to France and establish it, not without effort and sacrifice. He works as a DJ and radio presenter, poorly paid or not at all, organizes parties and produces his first record. At the same time, young people in the suburbs, many of immigrant origin, are discovering rap as a means of expression. Against exclusion, racism, police violence. The right-wing populist Le Pen collects votes, migrants die in police custody. Material for the sharp lyrics of aspiring rappers Didier Morville aka Kool Shen and Bruno Lopes aka Joey Starr, who become record millionaires under the group name Suprême NTM.
The team of authors, essentially Hélier Cisterne, Vincent Poymiro, David Elkaïm, Katell Quillévéré (also directing), tell this story, with the usual minor, dramaturgically required changes, historically accurate and extremely authentic. Occasionally documentary material is used. The performances are remarkable.
Katell Quillévéré, who has already appeared in several cinema films, stages realistically and downright fiercely. The series lacks the usual patterns of cinematic musician biographies – discovery, rise, hubris, fall, reconciliation. The heroes are not model boys. Paint cans and LPs are stolen, drugs are traded and taken. Even when the first signs of success became apparent, Didier, the highly talented lyricist, remained recalcitrant and unpredictable towards his friends. The fact that he was brutally beaten by his single father has had a lifelong effect.
The series ends with the recording of NTM’s first record and an offer to Bigeault to remix some of top star Mylène Farmer’s tracks. He maintains his integrity and refuses. Later, according to his own ideas, he will work together with well-known musicians such as Maceo Parker, Les Rita Mitsouko, and the Beastie Boys.
The role of women in the development of French hip-hop is not concealed, it is even expressly emphasized in the credits, namely the choreographer Virginie Sullée alias Lady-V, who died in an accident in 2000. She is also a rapper, but without the success of her male colleagues. In its early days, hip-hop was male-dominated. If women dared to take the stage as rappers, they were shouted down.
The story also includes Nina Hagen, found in the environment of Jean Paul Gaultier in 1989, who gives Suprême NTM its first television appearance.
