Masameer Junior 2025 Movie Review

So, I have something to confess, I have somehow never heard of the series this is based off of. It’s funny because apparently, this web series took the world by storm. From what I can gather, it’s an Arabian series that provides social commentary on the state of, well, Saudi Arabia. Though it is made pretty clear that because this centers around the characters at a younger age, you don’t really need to have seen the show to understand this.

It’s also worth note this is aimed at a slightly younger demographic than the main series. The web series itself is a pure adult comedy while this was given a PG-13 rating. That means it’s still definitely an edgy comedy with plenty of mature content. And at the very least, I can honestly call this mature. Not only is the subject matter relevant, there is also a sense of wit to the film’s dialog as it’s actually quite subtle in comparison to a lot of adult animated comedies. Heck, it’s one of those rare adult animations where the language is kept surprisingly clean with the occasional swear word coming in every 5-10 minutes, and even that’s not too inappropriate. So it never feels like the film is cramming mature content down your throat to remind you that it’s not a family film.

What really surprised me was how much I was rooting for the main characters. On one hand, nothing they do is exactly ideal. They constantly cause chaos everywhere they go, but there is a bit of charm to it as they are actually trying to do good so they can one day ascend to Heaven. It’s just that they’re going about it in all the wrong ways. Every time they think they’ve done a good deed, they’ve actually done something awful, and I like that they at least realize they messed up. At one point, they realize they’re so good at killing people that the main plot centers around them trying to murder someone they believe to be pure evil.

There is also a genuinely heartfelt story line involving the leader of a terrorist group. It didn’t get me super emotional, but I was invested in that and honestly felt pretty bad for the guy.

The animation style is very simple, but that’s alright because it matches the web series but at least has an enhanced movie budget. It looks cheap, but it works well with what it has. In fact, it’s kinda like if Rick and Morty had less fluid movements.

Probably the one downside is that while I did get a few outside laughs, for the most part, I was laughing inside. Part of the reason for this is that the line delivery is a little too quick, so it was kind of hard to follow along with what the characters were saying at times. But regardless, I quite enjoyed my time with this and I might just check out the series.
