That woman is The Fury, who is contracted by the city’s six mafia families to clean up difficulties which might keep their criminal enterprises from running smoothly. “Those who have met her are no longer alive to tell the tale,” says a voice, “Except me.”
We flash to the present day. The voice is of Lyna Guerrab (Lina El Arabi), who claims to be “just a regular student.” Her boyfriend Elie (Jeremy Nadeau), who’s a cop, is planning something big for her birthday. He wants to meet her family, but she knows that is going to be hard because “my parents are criminals.” To be more specific, her father moves money around for various organized crime families, and her mother, well, her mother knows her way around firearms.
Lyna and Elie wake up late the next day, and as she’s dashing out to class, she gets a call from her banker that over €2 million has been deposited in her account. She knows that’s from her dad because of the code the person used to make the deposit. She goes to her parents’ house, passing one of her father’s clients as she goes inside. She doesn’t want his ill-gotten gains, even if they can’t trace them. But as she and her parents celebrate her birthday, her father is shot in the head from a distance. Her mother locks her in a safe room and tries to fight the gunman, but gets seriously hurt.
Lyna is questioned by a police detective named Keïta (Eye Haidara) but she can’t tell her who shot her father. The cop tells Lyna that she can be put away for six months simply for the money her father deposited in her account. So Lyna ends up going to prison, where she spends her time getting beaten to a pulp, groped by a corrections officer, and training herself to inflict pain when needed. She knows that The Fury was the shooter, and wants to find her when she gets out. She even wallops the handsy guard on her last day inside so she can get in isolation with a woman who knows where The Fury might be.
When she gets out, she avoids Elie so he’s not ensnared in her plan, visits her mother Amythis (Fatima Adoum) and finds out she has amnesia, then starts to follow the money. She starts at an illegal casino where people playing blackjack have to break their fingers with a hammer if they get a particular card; there she meets and beats a high roller named Orso (Sandor Funtek). She then follows a recycling truck that takes the casino’s money and decides to steal it. Her thought is that she wants to flush out people who know The Fury.
The next day, when she observes who comes to take the abandoned truck and the money inside, she meets Selma (Marina Foïs), who at first seems like a middle-aged woman out with her grandkids. But she soon realizes that Selma is The Fury. But what she doesn’t know is that Selma knows who Lyna is and wants the young woman to come find her.
Created by Jean-Yves Arnaud and Yoann Legave, Furies isn’t pretending to be anything but an action-filled story about a woman’s infiltration of Paris’ criminal underground. It’s full of action, it’s main character is appropriately brooding, and the location shots in the City of Lights are all well-done.
The action sequences, especially the one where Lyna crawls atop the moving recycling truck to get in the cab and take the truck over, are well done. Are they completely believable? Not really. Yes, Lyna has spent her six months in jail training herself to be a lot more efficient of a pain inflictor than she was going in, but it feels like she also somehow learned military-style defensive moves and a little bit of martial arts, as well. It almost felt like her hijacking the lumbering money truck was too easy.
Then again, it might have been; there is something that Selma/The Fury sees in Lyna that makes her think she’ll be a useful member of her team. There is evidence that she’s been tracking Lyna since she was a child, for reasons we’re not privy to just yet. So there is definitely hints at a deeper story here.
But even if there isn’t, and the entire first season is setups where Lyna gets to kick ass and shoot people, we may not mind it all that much.
