Find Me Falling 2024 Movie Review

This weekend, I watched ‘Find me Falling’, despite the discouraging 6.4/33%/50 rating. I was in the mood for a comedy and it was my turn to choose. Comedy, especially RomCom tends to struggle to achieve high ratings. Aside: why can’t we get comedy without romance and romance without comedy as categories?

Anyhow, the narrative (script and storyline) was strong, the acting was strong, apart from the agent who was singularly unconvincing at all times, the costumes were good, we laughed. One line was terrible, come to think of it, “everybody knows everybody else in Crypus”, like Cyprus is a town, not a country. A sadly common Hollywood mistake. Even choosing a region might have been excusable.

I enjoy seeing middle-aged romance depicted onscreen and Agni Scott gave a wonderful and convincing performance. Harry Connick Jr was good and solid and Ali Fumika Whitney was delightful and natural. Female supporting roles were great and I think they had fun. On reflection, the men seemed slightly awkward if not embarrassed… perhaps the genre, usually associated with female viewers created a mild emasculation in them!

But this movie should have been, could have been brilliant. It has the potential of Mamma Mia and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. So what went wrong?

I suspect budget. I deliberately haven’t researched this movie before writing this because I want to capture my raw response. After all, that’s was it should be about – the audience’s experience of of the 90 minutes or so they spend invested in a film.

Apart from the footage hopefully shot in Cyprus or the Mediterranean, the majority must have been shot in a studio. It looks and felt like it. Sadly, it must have felt like it to the actors because their level of conviction came across. It wasn’t convincing. We all had to try too hard.

That would work on stage if the actors were fully bought in, because we all suspend disbelief. We know they’re not really in Cyprus. But this made the only actor who wasn’t supposed to be there, the agent, even more disappointing.

I’m so sorry. Sorry that they couldn’t have invested more in a movie that could’ve been great. And sorry that I ended my evening more than a little bit disappointed I wasn’t better entertained.

And that studios don’t hire someone like me for two hours, just to pick up and feed back about the continuity error in treating many countries outside the US like towns!
