An Ahsoka Tano show has been a long time coming for Star Wars fans. After making her debut as Anakin’s young Padawan in the animated series The Clone Wars, George Lucas’s last Star Wars effort, Ahsoka’s journey has been a high-climbing roller coaster with high highs (becoming one of the franchise’s most beloved and developed characters) and low lows (receiving extremely contentious fan reactions). Originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein, the character was drawn and created by artist Dave Filoni, now Lucasfilm’s executive creative director, for Clone Wars. Since her inception, the character has been shepherded from many seasons of Clone Wars to Star Wars Rebels and recently into The Mandalorian universe as he and his Ahsoka, now played by Rosario Dawson, make the leap from animation to live action. Below, everything we know about the upcoming, highly anticipated Star Wars series, including the brand-new trailer.
Ever since the release of The Mandalorian, and the subsequent positive response it received from fans and critics alike, Disney+ and Lucasfilm are on their way to expanding the Star Wars universe. To that effect, in 2022, the duo announced a brand-new series titled Ahsoka. As its name suggests, this Star Wars series will be based on Ahsoka’s character and will feature Rosario Dawson in the titular role.
The show is being developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, who previously worked together on the hit Emmy-winning series The Mandalorian as well as other Star Wars projects.
Previously, a teaser of the upcoming series was unveiled. It opened with scenes of Ahsoka getting attacked at a Jedi site and also featured some popular characters making a comeback.
Now, a new trailer has dropped, giving us additional insight into the upcoming series. It hints at a training relationship between Tano and Sabine Wren, where Wren is likely being taught some lightsaber skills. The most exciting bit, however, is the introduction of Grand Admiral Thrawn in a live-action avatar with Lars Mikkelsen portraying the iconic character. The actor previously voiced Thrawn in Star Wars Rebels.
Ahsoka’s story from The Mandalorian and will focus on investigating an emerging threat to the galaxy after the fall of the Galactic Empire.
A skilled warrior who is highly proficient with lightsabers, Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars as the Padawan learner of Anakin Skywalker. She later made an appearance in the TV series of the same name. A Togruta female, which is a species that is characterised by its colourful skin and head-tails called montrals, Ahsoka quickly became a fan-favourite.
As mentioned above, Rosario Dawson, who portrayed Ahsoka in The Mandalorian, will reprise her role in the series. The rest of the cast includes Ray Stevenson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Okay, yeah, it’s a lot of story if you haven’t seen the animated shows, but Star Wars is going to keep weaving in animation with the live-action shows whether we like it or not. To keep it short, the finale of the Rebels animated series featured a huge face-off between the Ghost crew (Ezra, Hera, Sabine, and Zeb Orrelios, who was just on an episode of The Mandalorian) and the Empire. Jedi Ezra saves his planet and friends by flinging himself and Thrawn into space with the help of some Purrgil space whales (I promise it’s more emotional in context.) The Purrgils also made their live-action debut in this season of The Mandalorian. But since the show’s finale, way back in 2018, fans have been waiting for a continuation show with Sabine and Ahsoka on the hunt for Ezra. Now the pieces are all coming together for Filoni’s Ahsoka.
