Subteran Review 2025 Tv Show Series Cast Crew Online
It seems it’s the week of crime shows because this is the second one I’ve seen, and I think it might be the better of the two. Netflix’s Subteran tells the story of a single mom named Cami who is an IT expert with a cop boyfriend. Her life turns completely upside down when her boyfriend goes to a hotel on a secret mission and ends up being shot while on a video call with her. Cami’s left with no choice but to become a criminal herself in order to find out what happened to her boyfriend Luca and keep her son from falling into serious danger. Sounds run-of-the-mill, I know, but it’s actually pretty well made. This is my first-ever Romanian show, and I’ve got to admit I’m pleasantly surprised by its high production value and good storytelling. Subteran is definitely not unique or original, but that doesn’t inherently make it bad TV. Things can be derivative, and then things can be inspired. I think Subteran manages to cross over to the latter pretty well and never makes you feel like you’re wasting time on something you’ve already seen before.
What I appreciate about the show is that it is quite trope-y, but it does that pretty well without being ashamed of it. For example, we have a Clark Kent situation where the female lead goes from wearing glasses and formal wear to having orange hair extensions, and we’re just meant to believe that makes her unrecognizable. But I will say this is the only thing about the show that needs you to suspend your disbelief, because honestly the rest of it is quite realistic and doesn’t drag on in any way. The overarching story is fast-paced and doesn’t leave time to think about much. Also, I do appreciate that it’s not vocally feminist but uses its female characters well, though the evil one may seem a little bit like a caricature.
Of course, the big takeaway from the show is that the female lead is a mom and will do anything to protect her child; that is how it usually goes when there’s a single woman in the mix, but Cami is never a damsel in distress; she manages to do everything herself. Even when there’s help, it’s not direct help; it’s just to elevate her abilities or to get her to the right places. Bones is an interesting character who feels a little bit half-baked. I don’t think we learn enough about him to feel connected with him as the main character of the show, but if there’s a second season, I’d definitely like to see him come back. The show definitely throws some curveballs at you, but if you’re paying attention, you won’t realize that. I think it’s also quite predictable, and you know immediately who might be on the “other side” when the character is first introduced. Nobody else really stands out other than Cami, Bones, and Tili.
The first two episodes of Subteran are actually fantastic and the best of the series. It definitely slows down a little bit after that, but that’s not to say it gets bad; it’s just not as excellent as the beginning. I really appreciate that it’s only 6 episodes and they go by super fast. You can watch the show dubbed, and you won’t even realize it; the dub is pretty good and doesn’t feel like it’s some random dialogue that’s been superimposed onto a good show. I also don’t think anything is lost in translation, which is a rarity on Netflix, but don’t quote me on that because I don’t speak a word of Romanian. Still, I always say it’s best to watch a show in its original form, so if you’ve got the time and energy, give Romanian a try.
You know, from observation I’ve learnt that the first half of the year sees a lot of good TV from around the world. Maybe it’s because it’s a quieter time for Hollywood, which is focused on award season and movies, or maybe I’m making things up in my head (highly likely), but I would say not to sleep on the random Netflix shows from around the globe in the first half.
In terms of action, the show is packed, and in every episode, there’s at least some kind of chase or some kind of combat that’ll keep you engaged. Visually, the show is well made, and like I said, you can tell it’s got high production value. A bonus is that there’s a cat on the show, which I always think is an excellent sign that something’s actually pretty good. I personally don’t enjoy this genre much, but I was never bored, and I watched all 6 episodes in one sitting, so that should probably tell you something. Subteran is entertainment through and through; there’s a lot of glamor from the rich and some exciting and unexpected gore. I cannot go without talking about the music that’s upbeat and really works for the kind of show that it is. I’m not going to lie; I now want to check out Romanian rap, specifically by female artists.
Overall, the show is well-curated and goes down easy. If you’re a fan of the crime-thriller genre, it’ll definitely be a good add-on to your list. Honestly, there isn’t anything actually negative I can say about the show. It doesn’t objectify its women in action, unlike what the first episode will have you believe, and it’s got a good story that doesn’t die down. Also, if you’re not a fan of ambiguous endings, then here’s some good news: the show has a solid ending while not snuffing out the spark of a possible second season, but if you want to leave it behind, you might as well. It seems like a fun show to watch with friends and guess what’s coming next too. I’d give Subteran 3.5 out of 5 stars because even though I have nothing bad to say about it, I don’t think it’s mind-blowing TV either. It’s just the right amount of sass and fun for the start of a TV year, so take that as you will.
