Rumours 2024 Movie Review

Rumours (2024), directed by Guy Maddin, is a surreal political satire that pokes fun at the absurdity of global leadership. Set during a G7 summit, the film features a stellar ensemble cast led by Cate Blanchett as Hilda Orlmann, the Chancellor of Germany. The plot takes a bizarre turn when the leaders of the world’s most powerful nations are confronted with resurrected bog bodies, and their political bickering becomes intertwined with apocalyptic events.

The film shines in its first act, where it deftly mocks national stereotypes and political incompetence. Blanchett’s performance is particularly praised, embodying a quirky, authoritative leader with charm and humor. Roy Dupuis and Nikki Amuka-Bird also stand out with their performances, adding depth to the comedy. The humor, though dark and sometimes controversial, draws on real-world issues, delivering a critique of modern political priorities.

However, the film struggles in its second half. The narrative loses focus, with characters meandering through the plot without much development. While the inclusion of aliens and a giant brain adds to the zaniness, it doesn’t fully pay off, leading to a somewhat messy conclusion. Despite these flaws, Rumours manages to be a fun, if uneven, political romp with moments of brilliance that make it an enjoyable watch for fans of satire
