Home swapping is a common practice in the travel world, whether through organizations such as HomeExchange that bring homeowners together or through private arrangements between individuals. Anyone with friends in, say, Barcelona, could easily swap their Buenos Aires home for a while and enjoy a change of scenery. That’s precisely the kind of change of scenery the two couples at the center of this Swedish thriller, based on Stefan Ahnhem’s novel, are looking for. Both Carl and Helene and Adam and Scarlett are financially comfortable couples living in luxurious homes in Stockholm and Sicily, respectively. But something is not quite right in either marriage, so they decide to trade houses for a while.

Adam (Jakob Oftebro) and Scarlett (Emma Appleton) are the ones now staying in a beautiful Stockholm home, enjoying its location and the sleek modern house they have temporarily made their own. At first, aside from a nosy neighbor and a few marital tensions — it quickly becomes apparent that Adam has plans of his own — everything seems to be going smoothly. Things are rather different in Sicily, where Carl (Fares Fares) and Helene (Frida Gustavsson) have settled into their temporary home. The house is gorgeous, enormous and seemingly idyllic, but there are problems: dirt, strange objects, unpleasant smells. To make matters worse, the police show up asking about a missing person. The couple claim to know nothing, but it soon becomes clear that Carl has gaps in his memory. Before long, even he begins to doubt himself.

The series moves back and forth in time to reveal connections between the two couples that date back to the past, along with the darker secrets each of them is hiding. In Stockholm, Scarlett is worried because she hasn’t heard from her estranged brother Tom. Adam, meanwhile, has secrets of his own, which he does his best to keep under wraps, though he doesn’t seem particularly good at it. In Sicily, Carl is hoping to close a multimillion-dollar real estate deal, but the rumors about someone having gone missing in the village could put the whole business at risk. Once the identity of the missing person is revealed, the web of secrets linking the two couples, along with a seemingly endless series of lies and betrayals, gradually begins to unravel.

A Couple of Lies is a fairly typical bestseller adaptation in miniseries form. Across four brisk episodes, creator Amanda Högberg, her team of writers and director Kasper Barfoed, who helms all four installments, weave and unweave the connections between the four main characters and the two houses, whose stories turn out to be far more intertwined than they initially appear. This applies not only to the mysteries and surprises each couple encounters in their temporary homes, but also to their shared histories and the secrets from the past buried within both households.

The Swedish series never rises above the middle of the pack. It would be difficult to classify it as Nordic noir, since it is as impersonal as any commercial bestseller and doesn’t even follow the genre’s traditional conventions. Its appeal lies in some of the narrative twists and surprises, as well as the obvious visual pleasure of the Sicilian landscapes and the Stockholm archipelago. Beyond that, there isn’t much to it. It’s an easy watch, and just as easy to forget, since its tricks, twists and revelations are so formulaic that you can see them coming from a mile away. The series doesn’t make much of an effort to conceal them, either. They’re all out in the open, under the Sicilian sun or beneath Stockholm’s bright blue skies. Millionaires don’t need dark alleyways to commit their crimes.
