Akka Review 2026 Tv Show Series Cast Crew Online

Akka has one of the most original premises Indian streaming has offered in a while, and that alone is worth the price of admission. An 800 year old matriarchy in the fictional Pernuru, somewhere between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, where women in silk and gold run the liquor and gold trade, marriage is abolished, girl children are celebrated and men know their place. For the first couple of episodes the world-building genuinely carries you: the three houses and their territories, the rituals, the costumes, the deliberately remote landscape. It looks expensive and it looks unlike anything else on the platform right now.

The performances hold up too. Keerthy Suresh plays Bhavani with restrained, straight-backed authority rather than constant shouting, and Radhika Apte’s Rudra is quietly unsettling precisely because she never raises her voice to make you uncomfortable. Tanvi Azmi, Poornima Indrajith and Pooja Mohanraj fill out the sisterhood with real presence. Nobody in this cast is the problem.

The problems are two. First, the pace. The series spends so long explaining clans, customs and successions that the actual conflict arrives late, and several stretches genuinely drag. Five episodes is a reasonable length, but a tighter script would have made it feel like five tight episodes rather than a feature stretched out.

Second, and this is my bigger issue: the characters never feel as powerful as the story insists they are. If a matriarchy has ruled for eight centuries by fear, it should look and feel as formidable as that claim. Here, most of that power is told to us rather than shown. The women are commanding in posture, but we rarely see the cunning, the strategy or the hard decisions that would make them genuinely dangerous. They glare, they declare, they react. The throne is grand; the people sitting on it feel smaller than their own mythology.

I am still giving it 4 stars, because the idea, the world and the performances are worth it, and a show that tries something this different deserves the encouragement. But it is a flawed watch beautiful, ambitious and only half as ruthless as it thinks it is. I would come back for a second season, hoping the writing finally catches up to the ambition.
