Scurry 2025 Movie Review
After surviving a catastrophic incident, a man wakes up inside a massive underground tunnel with a strange woman and sets out to figure out what happened, eventually discovering the massive underground insect-like creatures running amok, and must get to safety.
Overall, this was a stylish, if somewhat problematic, genre effort. Among the better aspects to be had within here is the fun premise that offers a wholly impressive storyline that genuinely does something interesting. The idea of the whole thing presented as a single-take, live-action interaction, which provides a lot of interaction with the two going around the tunnels looking to get to freedom, is an incredibly effective one.
The idea of being trapped in the location and looking to escape despite their different personalities and perspectives is an intriguing enough idea at its core. As well, there’s also the series of interactions that take place involving the creatures in the tunnels with them. The design is impressive enough with the insect-like design and otherworldly size compared to normal specimens, but the situations are also rather fun as there are scenarios involving stalking in the tunnel or a few bits featuring soldiers fighting off the apocalyptic takeover above them.
Enhancing the whole idea of them trapped underground, as you hear the skittering cries in the background with them. These all manage to give this a fun enough time here, as there are a few big issues to be had. The main issue holding this one down is the wholly overlong and plodding pace that really drains the life from this one more than it really should. The film takes way too long to get going with the exploits of the two meeting up underground and trying to come to terms with the situation surrounding them, how to escape, and whether they can help each other. It holds off the creatures until nearly an hour in.
This is all fine to keep them interesting and likable, but in terms of tempo, this definitely gets held up at times and feels rather sluggish in the first half. The other big issue with this one is the series of bizarre inclusions of weak CGI that are utilized throughout here. Mainly being utilized for the few glimpses of the creatures as they are shown only fleetingly while maneuvering around the tunnels, or the times they appear in the tunnels, there’s some plainly awful CGI on display for the admittedly cool design that helps hold it up against these rather bad effects. However, there’s little going on here to save the fire effects featured here, which look awful and really take the sting out of the finale, which gives this the kind of issues that keep it down.
