Another End 2025 Movie Review
I’ve seen my fair share of different types of sci-fi films in my time. A good number of them have dealt with bringing people back to life or finding a way to put a conscience from one body into another one. This is a popular trope in sci-fi films these days, it seems. Another End is the latest movie that uses this tired trope in its film. This was a good way to use this trope, but I’m pretty sick and tired that filmmakers can’t come up with other ways to sci-fi tales.
Sal (Geal Garcia Bernal) is a grieving husband who misses his deceased wife. His sister Ebe (Barenice Bejo) works for a company that transfers the thoughts of a deceased person and puts them into another body using an experimental technology. Her brother is not interested in the process at first because he believes it’s not natural, but eventually, he comes around to it.The first surrogate isn’t exactly what he’s looking for. They don’t get along that well. When he feels lonely one night, he goes to a nightclub and sees a woman he’s attracted to, Ava (Renate Reinsve). They hit it off while discussing their lives.
I understand loneliness because it’s an everyday thing for me. I also understand loss because I’ve lost my father last week and two close friends in the last six months. This story resonated with me on those levels. I don’t have a wife and have never had one. I get the whole significant other side of having a wife. Some people never get over losing a husband or wife. That was a strong part of the story. The Garcia Bernal character couldn’t fill that hole in his life until he met the Reinave character. Even though she was a sex worker and it was her job to connect to men on an intimate level, they still found kinship despite that. It was a beautiful relationship in the second half of the film. I genuinely cared about these two people in the third act of the story.
Even though there was a connection that the Garcia Bernal character made with the sex worker I still want to talk about the part where he wasn’t connecting with the other surrogate his deceased wife’s memories were put into. These two tried connecting with each other on the level a husband and wife should. They hung out at night on the couch, watching movies on their projector and eating popcorn. They ate Chinese food for dinner because her memories had that in her mind to do. It just tells you that even though there is that connection, it doesn’t mean it’s going to work in the end. A marriage and romantic relationship takes time and effort to cultivate.
The technical aspects of this story were good, not great, because the score was a separate thing in and of itself for this film. The music played its part well. There was a moody part, and there was a somber part, but both parts of the score worked in context with the film. A key technical aspect of the film was the cinematography. With that being an important part, I’m unfortunately going to have to say it wasn’t very good. It’s dark and hard to see. Right from the very beginning of the film, I had a hard time seeing what was going on. Maybe it was the screener or something, but I can only say what I feel. I wished I could see the film better so I could enjoy it more.
The three main actors, Garcia Bernal, Bejo, and Reinave, were all good in this movie. They all had a believability factor for me within the context of the story. There are actors who have done great work in other films like I Tu Mama Tambien, The Worst Person in the World and The Artist, an Academy Award winning Best Picture. They, like I said, are good in this film, but overall, the movie itself isn’t that good. The first half is slow and monotonous, while the second half is much better, but I have to judge the entire film. For me, it wasn’t great despite the parts that I liked. There were good parts, though.
Another End is a film that has some good aspects that include the acting from the three leads, the score, and the second half of the story. The cinematography and the slow start didn’t help this film at all. You have to catch my eye and hear right from the get-go, and this movie didn’t do that, unfortunately. The concept was one used before in quite a few films. It’s hard to take something used so much and make it interesting. This movie almost does it but not quite. There were just too many things I wasn’t happy with in this film. They outweighed the things I liked.
