Wolf King Season 2 Review 2025 Tv Show Series Cast Crew Online
Netflix has its fair share of animated projects on the platform but perhaps none are quite so underrated as The Wolf King. Based on the Wereworld books, The Wolf King roared onto the scene back in March this year and brought with it a storm of good will and slick animation.
Season 1 ended on a big cliffhanger, leaving the door wide open for this follow-up. Here, we see Drew’s journey continue as he fights for the throne of Lyssia while surrounded by threats on all sides.
Lucas is still on the hunt and makes his move, kidnapping Gretchen and setting up a “save the damsel in distress” storyline. This is nicely interwoven around Drew’s need to try and pick a Queen to rule alongside him, something that he’s not particularly enthused with and certainly isn’t adept at wooing the ladies.
Instead, Drew focuses most of his attention on getting Gretchen back, leaving with Whitley in the process. Unfortunately, this also leaves Highcliff susceptible to a big attack from Leopold.
This sets up an overarching character journey for Drew, who finds that he needs to learn how to become a strong King – and quick. It’s not all about wolfing out and attacking either, Drew needs to make tough decisions and he doesn’t always come out on top.
This inner-turmoil is beautifully realized across the 8 episodes, with everything from dreamy, hypnotic spells sporting a menacing wolf taunting Drew, to split-second decisions that affect the fate of the Kingdom. Or it would, until the season just… ends.
With the announcement earlier this year that Wolf King would only be returning for a second season, the creators have taken the bizarre approach of continuing this story… and then just ending it abruptly. Once again we have another cancellation casualty thrown into the heap of unfinished Netflix projects.
It’s particularly frustrating here because with a few extra episodes, and a reworked story gearing away from the source material, this could have had a slick, satisfying resolution. I’m never one to advocate for abandoning the source material, but instead of cramming 5 books into 8 episodes, or leaving things unfinished (like they have here), this could have been a good way of garnering some rewatchability in the years ahead. Alas, that doesn’t happen.
The characters this year are pretty good and have their own ups and downs but it’s hard to actually write about their journeys when a lot of the threads here are left dangling. Hector has a subplot around necromancy and a haunting that’s not really resolved properly, while the fate of Lyssia’s throne is unclear. That’s before mentioning the romantic implications that aren’t wrapped up either.
If there’s one saving grace with season 2, it comes from the action. Having already established the show’s stakes and characters the first time around, there’s a lot more fighting this time. It works really well, with a ton of slick choreograph and well-animated sequences across the series. The music and voice acting are also great too, and you can tell the show has been crafted by a talented and passionate team.
They say an ending can make or break a series, and with The Wolf King, that couldn’t be more true. What was shaping up to be a great show comes to a grinding halt, weighed down by the chains of a premature ending that leaves everything feeling frustratingly unsatisfying.
